A groundbreaking study from the University of Maryland has uncovered a hidden trend in American journalism. It found that a significant 9% of newly published articles were crafted, at least in part, by artificial intelligence, and most readers had no clue.
The researchers delved into over 250,000 articles using the Pangram AI detector, boasting an impressive 99.99% accuracy for news content. The results? AI adoption varies wildly across the industry. Local papers are leading the charge, with a whopping 9.3% of their stories showing AI involvement, compared to just 1.7% for major national newspapers.
But here's where it gets controversial... The study also reveals a regional divide. States like Maryland, Tennessee, and Alabama are AI hotspots, with usage rates as high as 16.5%. Meanwhile, the Northeast is lagging behind, with states like New Hampshire and Massachusetts seeing much lower AI-generated news.
And this is the part most people miss: AI is concentrated in specific sections. Weather stories top the list with a 27.7% chance of being AI-generated, followed by science and tech (16.1%) and health (11.7%). Sensitive topics like war and crime receive less AI coverage (4.3% and 5.2%, respectively).
Media companies are taking varied approaches to AI. Some, like Boone Newspapers, lead the way with over 20% of their articles attributed to AI, while others, like Nash Holdings and Lee Enterprises, keep it below 2%.
But here's the real twist: several major media groups are suing AI companies for scraping their content, even as they publish AI-generated stories themselves!
The surge in AI-generated content is especially notable in opinion sections. An analysis of top national newspapers shows a 25-fold increase in AI use in op-eds and commentaries, with guest contributors like politicians and CEOs more likely to turn to AI than staff journalists.
Transparency is a major issue. Of 100 AI-flagged articles, only 5 disclosed AI involvement. Just 7 out of 100 newspapers even allow AI content in their guidelines, and even those with strict bans aren't immune.
AI is being used in various ways, from automated weather reports to AI-written advice columns. One newspaper, the Argonaut, was found to be fully AI-generated, with fictional reporters!
