Bass Fishing Tournament on Lake Hartwell: Strategies and Predictions (2026)

Get ready for an exciting fishing tournament at Lake Hartwell! This week, the Bass Pro Tour is coming to South Carolina's premier bass fishing destination, and it's going to be a thrilling spectacle. With over 90 MLF/FLW events hosted at this lake, including the BFL All-American and Bassmaster Classics, Hartwell is no stranger to top-level competition. But this time, things are a little different. The O'Reilly Auto Parts Stage 2 Presented by Lowrance tournament will bring the Bass Pro Tour field to the lake, and it's the first time Hartwell will host a high-stakes tournament with every fish counting. So, what can fans and anglers expect from this unique event?

A Massive Playing Field
Lake Hartwell is a giant, covering 56,000 acres and boasting almost 1,000 miles of shoreline. But it's not just the size that makes it impressive; fellow Palmetto State native Casey Ashley notes that the lake has a reputation for 'swallowing up' large fields of boats. With only 51 BPT anglers on the water, the field should have plenty of space to spread out. Ashley predicts that anglers might not even see another boat for the entire four days of competition, highlighting the vastness of the lake.

A Shifting Weather Pattern
The weather is also playing a crucial role in this tournament. Recent cold weather has crashed water temperatures, but they've been steadily climbing over the past couple of weeks. With highs in the 70s forecast for the first few days, Ashley expects the bass to become increasingly active, with some pushing into shallow waters. However, Robinson predicts that the shifting weather might also make the bass harder to pin down, as they transition between winter haunts and prespawn staging areas.

All About the Spots
The key to success at Hartwell will be finding reliable ways to target its healthy spotted bass population. While largemouth bass will also be present, it's much easier to catch numbers of spots, which will be crucial given the every-fish-counts scoring format. Robinson believes that spots will be the main target, and there will be various ways to catch them, from pelagic bass eating blueback herring to schools holding in pockets and staging around brushpiles, cane piles, docks, and other shoreline cover.

Finesse Fishing and Forward-Facing Sonar
Finesse fishing techniques, such as shaking a jighead minnow for bass on forward-facing sonar, will be essential for success. While both Ashley and Robinson acknowledge that anglers will need to take advantage of their daily period with modern sonar, they don't expect it to be a minnowfest. The fish on Hartwell are smart and used to this technique, so it might not be the dominant strategy, but it could still play a significant role in the tournament.

Finding the Right Spots and Big Bass
The other key to success will be finding populations of bigger-than-average size. Robinson notes that there are lots of bass under the 2-pound minimum scorable weight in Hartwell, so anglers need to be efficient in weeding through those fish. He predicts that the weight totals will be similar to Stage 1 on Lake Guntersville, with around 35 pounds per day during the two-day Qualifying Round needed to advance to the Knockout Round, and a cut weight of 40 pounds per day.
