Beachfront Hotel Expansion Sparks Worker Opposition and Debate on Central Coast
The Central Coast city of Santa Barbara is set to welcome a luxurious expansion to the Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort, despite ongoing concerns about affordability and a heated debate among local workers. The project, which has been a topic of discussion for years, involves adding 73 rooms to the existing 24-acre property, bringing the total to 329 rooms. This expansion is part of a larger vision for the area, which includes a proposed 250-room hotel with high-end amenities, potentially replacing the city's beloved Funk Zone, a hub for local artists and businesses.
The Historic Landmarks Commission, responsible for preserving Santa Barbara's architectural and cultural heritage, unanimously supported the expansion in December. However, this decision came after a contentious year, during which a union representing hotel workers, Unite Here Local 11, filed an appeal to stop the project. The union's attorney, Jordan R. Sisson, challenged the project's legality, alleging that the hotel had broken a previous agreement to build a 100-room hostel that would provide more affordable options for guests. This agreement was made in 2015, and according to a Coastal Conservancy survey, there were only 70 low-cost rooms in the city at the time, or approximately 3% of the total guest room stock.
The Santa Barbara City Council rejected the appeal in September, arguing that the hostel issue was separate from the hotel's ability to expand. The Hilton's expansion plans include not only adding 73 guest rooms but also increasing the property's size from 329,780 square feet to 375,708 square feet and boosting bicycle parking spaces from 58 to 100. However, vehicle parking spaces will be reduced from 931 to 880 total spaces.
The Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort, originally known as the Red Lion, opened in 1986 and was eventually incorporated into the Hilton brand. This expansion reflects a continued commitment to luxury hospitality in Santa Barbara, as a proposed 250-room hotel with high-end amenities makes headway, potentially impacting the city's beloved Funk Zone, a popular hub for local artists and businesses, located less than a mile away. The debate surrounding this project highlights the complex balance between economic development, preservation of cultural heritage, and the needs of local workers.
