Christmas Under Fire: Religious Leader Slams 'Detty December' Trend
The festive season is upon us, but not everyone is feeling jolly. The Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana, Professor Johnson Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu, has sparked a heated debate by condemning the popular 'Detty December' phenomenon, a term embraced by Gen Z in West Africa to describe their Christmas celebrations. He laments how the season, meant for joy and reflection, has devolved into a frenzy of indulgence, even extending to reckless driving due to increased holiday travel. In Ghana, it gained traction through the popular 'Detty Rave' concert by Mr. Eazy. However, the Bishop argues that the term's association with 'dirty' has led to a misinterpretation, reducing Christmas to a mere party season.
This isn't an isolated opinion. Kofi Okyere Darko (KOD), Director of Diaspora Affairs, shares similar reservations, stating that the term limits the season to entertainment, neglecting its deeper spiritual significance.

His words came during the induction ceremony of the 11-member connexional executive of the Fellowship of Methodist Evangelists, a group dedicated to spreading the Gospel. He charged the inductees, led by the first female Chairperson, Evangelist Gladys Mamtee Osabutey, to embody the saving grace of Jesus Christ in their lives and actions.
