California's Toxic Mushroom Crisis: 4 Deaths and 40 Hospitalizations (2026)

A recent outbreak of toxic mushrooms in California has resulted in four deaths and 40 hospitalizations, according to the state's Department of Public Health. The outbreak, which occurred between November 18, 2025, and February 7, 2026, has highlighted the dangers of consuming wild mushrooms. The two most dangerous varieties, the Death Cap and Western Destroying Angel, are known to grow more commonly after wet weather. These mushrooms may appear and even taste similar to store-bought, safe-to-eat mushrooms, but they can cause severe symptoms such as nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, liver and kidney damage, seizures, and death. Cooking these mushrooms does not make them safe to eat. Health officials recommend avoiding wild-picked mushrooms, keeping children and pets away from growing mushrooms, and buying mushrooms only from trusted grocers. Several patients, including children, have suffered severe liver damage, and at least one person may require a liver transplant. Officials have urged the public to avoid foraging during what they call a high-risk season for toxic mushrooms. This outbreak serves as a stark reminder of the importance of caution when foraging for mushrooms, and it is crucial to be aware of the potential risks associated with consuming wild mushrooms.
