Grange A&E Hygiene Concerns: Health Board Acknowledges Shortcomings

A recent visit to the A&E department at the Grange University Hospital has sparked hygiene concerns, as reported by patient Simon Deacon.

Deacon, 64, from Cwmbran, described a harrowing experience, stating he was surrounded by sick individuals and urine due to a perceived lack of cleaning staff. His six-hour stay revealed a stark contrast between the expected standards of cleanliness and the actual conditions.

During his visit on November 23, between 6:00 am and 12:00 pm, Deacon noted the absence of regular cleaning, with only one cleaner briefly appearing and not returning. He expressed his astonishment, saying, 'I’ve never seen something so filthy and dirty... it's like winter vomiting flu, and you can see how it spreads!'

Deacon's account highlights a disturbing scene, where patients had to endure vomit and urine on the floor, with some individuals apparently walking through it. He recounted, 'At 7:00 am, I was triaged and returned to the waiting area, where a cleaner briefly appeared, swirled a broom around our feet, and then vanished.'

The situation escalated as Deacon observed a cardboard sick bowl being filled and placed on a chair, never to be collected. He humorously noted, 'Then – for artistic contrast – someone else wet themselves, which did at least help dilute the previous spillages.' By the end of his visit, Deacon described the scene as 'one chalk outline short of a crime scene.'

The A&E department's overcrowding was exacerbated by family members accompanying their relatives. Deacon remarked, 'The waiting room became so overcrowded that I genuinely began to wonder whether some families had arrived expecting a fun day out.'

In response to Deacon's claims, a spokesperson for Aneurin Bevan University Health Board expressed deep regret, stating, 'We sincerely apologise to Mr. Deacon and to anyone affected by the concerns raised during his recent visit to The Grange University Hospital. We fell short of the high standards of cleanliness and hygiene that we expect and that patients rightly deserve.'

The health board assured that they take these matters seriously, with robust processes in place to address incidents involving bodily fluids promptly. They acknowledged the subpar service and are investigating the incident to prevent recurrence. Additionally, they are committed to enhancing the patient experience and addressing the growing needs of the population, with the upcoming opening of a new extension to the Emergency Department in mid-December.
