Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time Formula 1 champion, is taking a much-needed break from the sport during the winter break ahead of the 2026 season. After a challenging first season at Ferrari, Hamilton aims to 'unplug from the matrix' and disconnect from the pressures of F1. He plans to switch off completely from the sport, starting with the tyre test in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday and continuing until the weeks leading up to pre-season testing at the end of January.
The 40-year-old driver had a difficult season, failing to finish on the podium for the first time in his F1 career and finishing 86 points behind his Ferrari teammate, Charles Leclerc, in the Drivers' Championship. Hamilton described the 2025 season as 'the worst season ever' and a 'nightmare', indicating a need for a break.
In an interview, Hamilton expressed his eagerness to disconnect, stating, 'At the moment, I'm only looking forward to the break. Just to disconnect, not speaking to anyone. No one will be able to get in touch with me this winter. I won't have my phone with me, and I'm looking forward to that. Completely unplug from the matrix.'
This break from technology and F1 is a significant step for Hamilton, as he has generally kept his phone with him during previous breaks. He emphasized his determination to disconnect, saying, 'I've had amazing support from so many people around the world, sending messages. My fans have been the thing that has kept me going, they really have been the rock. My mum has been phenomenal, and my dad and family. I'm really appreciative of their support.'
The season began with high hopes for Ferrari, but team principal Frederic Vasseur acknowledged early on that it would be a challenging season. They decided to halt development in April, recognizing the need to reassess their strategy. Vasseur explained, 'The season was difficult overall, but we have to separate the performance of the weekend from the long-term development of the team. The pace was not magic from the start, and we faced disqualifications in race two in China, losing 25 points and starting the season on the back foot.'
Despite the challenges, Hamilton's break from F1 is a necessary step to recharge and refocus for the upcoming season. He aims to return refreshed and determined to compete at the highest level, with the 2026 season set to bring new opportunities and challenges.
