Neuse Charter School Achieves National Recognition by U.S. News & World Report
In a remarkable achievement, Neuse Charter School, which proudly holds the title of being the very first charter school in Johnston County, has earned acclaim by U.S. News & World Report as one of the nation’s premier high schools. Not only is it recognized among the best high schools overall, but it has also distinguished itself as one of the top charter high schools in the country. This accolade comes after an extensive evaluation of approximately 24,000 schools across various levels—national, state, and local—with around 18,000 of these institutions receiving specific rankings.
The evaluation process by U.S. News considers a comprehensive range of six key areas: readiness for college, proficiency in reading, math, and science, overall performance in those subjects, the achievement of underserved students, the breadth of college curricula offered, and graduation rates.
LaMont Jones, the managing editor for education at U.S. News, emphasizes the importance of accessible data for families navigating the often complex educational landscape. He remarked, "We believe every student deserves access to clear, actionable data when choosing their educational path. In an era where navigating educational opportunities can feel overwhelming for families, the 2025-2026 Best High School rankings help students and parents identify schools that align with their goals and empower informed decisions that shape students’ futures."
As Neuse Charter School continues to expand its reach, it remains steadfast in its mission to provide families with high-caliber public educational options grounded in solid relationships and high expectations. The institution's commitment hinges on a core belief that every child has the potential to succeed.
Dr. Melissa Blackwell, the Superintendent of Neuse Charter School, passionately stated, "This recognition belongs to our entire Neuse Charter community. Our students are learning not just academics, but perseverance and resiliency. Our staff guides them with care and commitment, continuously challenging them to be their best. We’re proud to serve Johnston County as a public charter school, and this honor reminds us that when schools and communities work together, our kids win."
Uniquely, Neuse Charter School is the only K-12 charter school in Johnston County that operates independently, allowing it to tailor its educational approach to meet the varied needs of its students.
