Animal rights activists are pushing for a radical change with Initiative Petition 28, aiming to extend the same protections we afford our beloved pets to a wide range of animals, from salmon to deer and cattle. This proposal seeks to remove exemptions from current animal cruelty laws, criminalizing any activity that harms or kills animals, except in cases of self-defense or veterinary care.
The PEACE Act, an acronym for People for the Elimination of Animal Cruelty Exemptions, would bring about a seismic shift in Oregon's farming, fishing, scientific research, and culinary industries. "I think it's crucial to acknowledge that our decision to kill animals is a choice, a strategy we've adopted to fulfill certain needs. I want to validate the importance of those needs, whether they're related to sustenance, culture, recreation, economic stability, or other aspects of our lives. But we have the power to make different choices," Michelson said.
To address the potential impact on industries, the initiative includes the creation of a transition fund to provide income replacement, job retraining, and food assistance. However, industry groups are vocal in their opposition, arguing that the initiative would criminalize many aspects of agriculture and recreational activities.
"This effort is misguided and would have far-reaching consequences for our state's agriculture and animal ownership practices," said Lauren Kuenzi of the Oregon Farm Bureau. "It's an attack on those who adhere to strict animal care standards designed to ensure the health and safety of animals."
Michelson acknowledges the challenges ahead, but he's taking inspiration from the women's suffrage movement, which persisted for decades before achieving success. He believes that even if the initiative doesn't pass in 2026, it's an important step towards raising awareness and shifting societal attitudes.
"I estimate that only around 1% to 2% of the U.S. population is vegan. If we can get a higher percentage of support, it will show that there's a growing interest in moving towards a more compassionate society. That would be a powerful statement, regardless of the final numbers," Michelson added.
