Imagine a future where everyone who wants a job can find one, regardless of their health, circumstances, or background. That's the ambitious goal of a groundbreaking, multi-million-pound initiative launching in Northumberland, aiming to dismantle the barriers that keep people out of the workforce.
But here's where it gets controversial: Is it enough to simply offer job opportunities, or do we need a complete overhaul of how we support individuals facing complex challenges like long-term illness, disability, or caring responsibilities?
This new program, aptly named 'Work Smart, Live Well,' takes a bold approach. In Northumberland alone, 54,800 working-age residents are currently economically inactive. Of those, 20,500 are long-term sick or disabled, 8,500 are caregivers, and 9,000 have retired early. Many of these individuals are already contributing to society through volunteering or caregiving, but with the right support, a significant portion could thrive in paid employment.
This initiative, funded by the UK Government through the North East Combined Authority and the NHS North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board, aims to do just that. With a whopping £6.97 million investment, Northumberland is building a streamlined system. A single point of access, a 'one-stop shop' if you will, will connect individuals with tailored support, from healthcare and physiotherapy to job training, financial advice, mental health services, and community resources.
The key lies in integration. By bringing together various programs and providers, the program maximizes resources and ensures a seamless experience for participants. This 'joined-up' approach, championed by Deputy Leader Richard Wearmouth, aims to not only get people into jobs but also to keep them there, fostering long-term economic growth and reducing inequality.
North East Mayor Kim McGuinness emphasizes the transformative potential: "This is about empowering people to secure jobs that truly work for them. When everyone has the chance to succeed, our communities and our economy flourish."
Samantha Allen, CEO of the NHS North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board, highlights the program's holistic nature: "For the first time, services will be wrapped around individuals, addressing their unique needs and removing the barriers that have held them back."
