Get ready for a festive travel rush, Maryland! The roads are about to get merrier, and busier!
Nearly 2.5 million Marylanders are gearing up for a holiday adventure, with most opting for the open road. AAA predicts a whopping 90% will drive, while the remaining 10% will take to the skies, seas, or rails.
But here's where it gets controversial...
Drivers in Baltimore County are reporting increased traffic, even on local roads. Tim Genco, a resident of Mays Chapel, shares, "It's been a mixed bag, but the beltway on weekends is always an adventure!" Reed Krakowitz from Reisterstown adds, "Side roads are bustling too, with everyone out shopping, visiting, and spreading holiday cheer."
And this is the part most people miss...
The weekend before Christmas and the days leading up to it are peak travel times. AAA warns of busy roads between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. on the Monday and Tuesday before Christmas. Similar traffic is expected from December 6th to the 28th as neighbors return home.
But there's a silver lining! Gas prices are down, offering drivers an early holiday gift. Genco says, "Every penny counts, and it's nice to have that extra cash for the holidays."
Meanwhile, local stores are abuzz with last-minute shoppers. Nicole Garcia, assistant manager at Graul's Market in Timonium, shares, "It's a bustling holiday season! People are prepping for their Christmas feasts."
For those flying, cruising, or taking the bus, BWI Airport expects 440,000 travelers during this high-demand period. TSA reminds travelers to keep gifts wrapped in their bags to avoid delays at security.
And here's a fun fact: Amtrak is experiencing a record year! So far in fiscal year 2025, they've seen a 5% increase in passengers, with 34.5 million people choosing the train.
AAA projects a total of 2.4 million Marylanders will travel for Christmas.
