Brace yourselves, UK! Storm Claudia is on its way, and it's bringing some serious weather with it. An amber weather warning has been issued, signaling the potential for significant disruption.
Flooding is a major concern, with the Met Office predicting up to 80mm of rain in some areas. That's a lot of water! The warning is in effect from midday until the end of Friday, impacting regions across Wales, the Midlands, the South West, South East, and East of England. Make sure to check your local weather forecast to stay informed.
The storm, named by Spain's meteorological service, is currently affecting the Canary Islands, and it's expected to cause travel chaos, power outages, and flooding in certain areas.
Met Office Chief Meteorologist Matthew Lehnert has warned that the heavy rainfall will be widespread across central and southern England and Wales from Friday into Saturday. He further explained that some areas could experience a month's worth of rain in just 24 hours! Within the amber warning zones, some areas could see over 150mm of rain accumulate, with 60-80mm being fairly common.
But there's more. Strong winds are also expected across northwest England and northwest Wales, with gusts potentially reaching up to 70mph in exposed locations.
And this is the part most people miss... The weekend will bring a change in weather. The northern UK will experience colder temperatures, with overnight frosts. While some showers may linger, this area will generally see drier and brighter conditions.
Further south, the weekend will start cloudy and wet, but the rain will gradually ease, eventually clearing to the south. The drier, colder conditions from the north will spread across all areas by the start of next week.
