Vin Diesel, the star of the Fast & Furious franchise, is set to write, produce, and star in the live-action adaptation of Mattel's iconic toy, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots. This announcement comes as a follow-up to the success of Mattel's Barbie movie, which became the studio's highest-grossing film ever at $1.44 billion. The film will bring the classic tabletop boxing game and its characters, Red Rocker and Blue Bomber, to life on the big screen.
Diesel's involvement with the project was first revealed in April 2021, and it has been a long-awaited collaboration. As a powerhouse storyteller with a deep understanding of action and world-building, Diesel's creative vision for Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots is described as bold, human, and deeply cinematic. He aims to explore the theme of competition in a world often measured by strength and dominance, while revealing the power of compassion at its core.
The film will be produced by Robbie Brenner, President of Mattel Studios and Chief Content Officer, and Samantha Vincent from One Race Films. Darian Greenbaum and Andrew Scannell will oversee the project for Mattel Studios, while Diesel will handle the production for his One Race Films banner. The movie is set to be released in theaters, with no specific date announced yet.
This is not the first time Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots has been adapted for the screen. It was previously set up at Universal, but this new version will bring a fresh take on the classic toy, appealing to modern audiences and fans of the original game.
